How Lymphedema Happens

Lymphedema is swelling caused by the accumulation of fluid in the space between the cells of the body, usually in the arms and legs.

What is the Treatment for Lymphedema

The GOLD STANDARD for lymphedema treatment is Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) and includes the following:

  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Light Exercise to flush the excess fluid out of the swollen area.

  • Limb Bandaging and Compression Garments to keep the fluid out between and after treatment sessions.

  • Skin and Nail Care to limit further injury to the skin.

Who is Appropriate for CDT?

Anyone who has been treated for cancer, especially breast cancer, is at risk for lymphedema. However, anyone with swelling may be appropriate for treatment. At this time Perception Physical Therapy is accepting new patients with arm swelling.
